A manual switchover setup for backup power involves installing a manual changeover (transfer) switch at the main power supply point of a home or business. This switch enables the user to physically disconnect the property’s electrical load from the public utility grid during a power outage and connect it to an alternative power source, such as solar-generated power with battery storage or a generator. How Manual Switchover Works Normal operation: The changeover switch connects the home load to the main utility grid, supplying electricity as usual. During a power cut: The user manually flips the switch to the backup mode. This action physically isolates the home’s wiring from the grid connection to prevent back-feeding electricity into the utility lines (which can be dangerous). Once isolated, the switch connects the home electrical circuits to the backup power source, which could be an inverter fed by solar panels and batteries or a backup generator. The inverter detects the grid failure (no voltage on the grid side), then starts supplying the house with stored solar/battery power. Switching back to the main grid after power restoration requires manually flipping the changeover switch back to line power mode.
